California to Japan—A Flight, A Layover, and A Dream Fulfilled

Nothing major, but little things—like how in Japan, people give and receive things with both hands as a sign of respect. I can already see myself picking up that habit before I return home.

Walking out of the terminal tunnel, I had this strong sense that I wouldn’t be the exact same person when I walked back through it. Change can be scary, but so is never growing. I’ll always choose growth!

What’s something you would want people to know about flying to another country?

Keep an open heart and mind. Initially, I was hesitant to fly with China Airlines. I was worried about how I might be treated and I also felt a little unsettled knowing that I would likely be one of the very few Black passengers on the flight. However, it's important to give people from different cultures and backgrounds a chance. When you do, the experience can be incredibly rewarding. As it was for me.

Embrace opportunities to experience a different culture.

For example, on China Airlines, the flight attendants frequently offered tea. I didn’t know what kind of tea it was, but I eagerly accepted it because I wanted to experience that part of Chinese airline culture. Also, many of the snacks served with the meals were Chinese snacks—so I decided to give them a try. They weren't bad.

Small moments like that make the journey even more special.
