California to Japan—A Flight, A Layover, and A Dream Fulfilled

I can't sleep while sitting upright. Even though I boarded at around 11:45 PM, it took a while before I could fall asleep. That said, I eventually managed to get about six hours of rest.

What kind of food did you eat on the plane?

When I booked my ticket, I selected the Hindu Special Meal—basically, Indian food! I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. During my flight to Taiwan, I received two Indian meals, and on my flight to Osaka, I had one more.

Lately, I’ve been really interested in Indian culture, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to enjoy Indian cuisine during my travels.

What did you do to keep yourself entertained on the long flight?

I watched movies! Each seat had its own mini flat-screen TV with a huge selection of free films, including Disney films. I watched Raya and the Last Dragon. Since I’m studying Japanese, I switched the language settings to Japanese. So I was able to watch the Japanese dub of Raya.

Did you make any new friends during your journey?

Not this time! But maybe I’ll meet someone on my return trip. You never know.

What did you see when you were flying over the ocean?

Mostly boats—lots of cargo ships and a few cruise ships.

Can you tell us what Taiwan was like during your layover? What did you do during your time there?

Taiwan was great! My layover was about 2 hours and 50 minutes, so I didn't have time to explore the actual city. However, I was able to check out Taoyuan airport, eating at one of the restaurants. I ordered the Taiwanese fried chicken, which was actually really good.
