A bottle of water costs around a dollar at home right? Here it's about four dollars, so you see people walking around with their own water bottles a lot. Also, soda is super expensive here, which is a bummer because I LOVE Coca-Cola. There's a heavy tax on sugar, which I guess is a good thing, until you have to pay around five dollars for a small Coke.
The best meal I had this week was one I made myself. I like to cook, and the highlight of the week was probably when I made myself Alfredo Pasta with Shrimp. They call shrimps "prawns" out here. They also have shellfish called "Morton Bay Bugs." They're local to Brisbane, so they're in season all year round, but are most popular during Christmas time. They taste a lot like crawfish but are way bigger.
Over the past week I listened to a lot of live music— mostly garage rock, so stuff that sounds unpolished and grungy. The most notable bands were Voiid, an all girl garage rock band from Brisbane; the Growlers, a surf rock band from my hometown of Orange County (they were doing an international tour); and The Babe Rainbow, which is a psychedelic band from the neighboring town of Gold Coast, Queensland.
The most fun activity of every week is hosting my radio show! We do it late at night from two a.m. to six a.m. and we play a lot of surf rock, garage rock and everything beyond and in between. Basically it gives me a chance to learn about new Australian bands and show people bands from America. It's nice doing it in the middle of the night because there's less pressure to be "professional".
