Many times, locals in my community have proudly given me things they grew themselves: oranges, bananas, avocados and even cacao, the fruit used to make chocolate. This gesture might seem insignificant, but it represents months of dedication, time, energy and money to care for the plant from seed to produce. In that sense, sharing what they grew is a deeply heartfelt gesture of companionship.
In turn, this generosity has inspired me to be more intentional about spending time and sharing with others, something I hope to take back to the United States.
