We've got the scat, now what?

Once we return from a snow leopard habitat with our scat samples our work is far from over. We now need to get the DNA from the scat to learn about the snow leopards in the habitats we work in.

After we remove the solid scat from the sample by vortexing (shaking) and centrifuging (spinning) the tubes and removing the liquid into another tube, we are ready to incubate.

We break up small pieces of scat and put them in a solution called buffer.

We have to be careful in the lab and keep our spaces clean and organized.

All the DNA we extract is stored in a very cold freezer so we can use it later.

We keep our scat samples in the freezer for long term storage.
