Farewell

Many people are unaware of this, but various genres of music are derived from Africa, including jazz, rumba and the blues. I enjoyed being able to witness a part of their culture before having to leave swiftly the next evening. The next day, I had to say heartfelt goodbyes to more than half of the group. I went on with four friends to visit one last street market, where traditional African garments, trinkets and other souvenirs were being sold. I bought a headwrap, jewelry and a dress with traditional African patterns. I even bought a dashiki, a loose brightly colored shirt with African patterns, for my dad. By that time, it was time to say my final goodbyes. I caught a taxi to the airport, and waved goodbye to my remaining friends.

While I was sad to return home, I was grateful for the opportunity to travel around the world and experience such diverse cultures and ways of living. I hadn't yet had the time to truly reflect on my amazing accomplishments and all the lessons I had learned from my semester. On March 14, the day before my flight. I wrote down a list of all the lessons I'd learned during my semester at sea voyage. The following are the major points I'd like to share with you all.

1. Stay away from single stories that tarnish the perception of others. Be conscious of the media you're consuming, because it can have the power to influence your thoughts and the way you view other communities different from your own. It's okay to question the status quo.

2. Many people have never experienced the beauty and deep connection humans have with nature, which is why numerous people have trouble caring for the environment.
