Chandler Vaughan – My Autobiography

I didn't know where I might want to go, but I knew I wanted to see the world. This led me to pursue the semester-at-sea program, the most expensive study abroad program on the list. However, I was blessed to receive the Gilman scholarship to offset the costs, as well as various semester-at-sea internal scholarships.

Throughout my undergraduate career, I have been invested in finding my niche—the place where I can best make a contribution to my community while remaining aligned with my personal passions and strengths. Once I began to see a pattern in my chosen commitments, I felt more sure as to ,my future calling. As a Black Christian young adult, I truly believe that God placed me on this Earth to be a change agent in my community, to use my talents and skills to serve others.

I believe the worst crime an institution can commit is to make a group of people forget who they are, their culture, and the beauty in their difference. In my opinion, education is the key to solving a plethora of issues, which is why I want to work as a community psychologist with a focus on the education realm. My passion for ensuring equity in education for the futures of all youth, especially incarcerated youth, stems from my undergraduate involvement and personal experiences with education. This is one of the reasons I am so excited to relive my study abroad journey, so I can share with you the many lessons I learned while travelling abroad! Hopefully, you'll be empowered to one day do the same.
