The Unique Geography of Singapore

Singapore was always made up of many foreigners since its beginning, and policies needed to be created in order to benefit from the ports as well as create policies that would benefit both visitors and permanent residents.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

Singapore is a wealthy country because of all the international trade that it partakes in. Thus, the government has a lot of money to help create a liveable country, like providing subsidies, creating parks, and investing in signficant infrastructure.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Weather-wise, it can feel like endless hot summer days. The weather is always hot and humid. Additionally, since the island is so small, most goods, especially food, have to be imported. Living-wise, most of the water is preserved for shipping ports. We have very few recreational beaches here because the focus is to prioritize the shipping industry instead. If you love summer weather and the city, this is the place for you! If you want colder weather, mountains, and beaches, Singapore may not be the best place to live.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

It's a national joke that Singapore has two weathers - the hot and humid outdoors versus the freezing cold AC inside. This is my personal observation, but I believe that Singapore has the best airconditioning in any of its buildings - it is always so cold to the point where I often bring a jacket to wear inside even if the weather is 90 degrees outside!
