I love food! Whether it be meals, snacks, desserts, or drinks, you can always find me looking for a new food spot to try. The food scene is one of the main reasons why I chose to study abroad in Singapore. Singaporeans are also big foodies like I am - there are areas called "hawker centers". These are groups of food stalls that share the same seating tables, and they're everywhere! These are the most affordable places to eat since the government subsidizes rent for hawker centers. Therefore, every block always has at least two restaurants that are filled with people at all times of the day.
You can find almost every type of food possible in Singapore, but today I'll focus on foods that I haven't seen often in the U.S. Let me know if you're familiar with them!
In this field note, I'll focus on kaya toast, a traditional Singaporean breakfast. The set contains a toast sandwich with cold butter and kaya jam on the inside, two soft boiled eggs, and either kopi or teh drinks. Kaya tastes like a coconut, vanilla, and sugar jam combination, and it's absolutely amazing!
