Beaches, Mountains and Valleys in Tonosí, Panama

Why is this little mouse so important? It is the reservoir for Hantavirus. This means that this species of mouse carries the dangerous virus and can spread it to humans. Because many people live near the fields where the mice live, sometimes the mice come around homes in search of food and water.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

When there are bad droughts in Panama that threaten crop loss, sometimes people must be very careful how much water they use in their day-to-day lives so there is enough to water the fields. To help stop future flooding from the river, authorities have started to build up barriers along the sides of the river. To avoid contact with the nearby rodents, people must keep their patios and homes very clean and make sure they do not leave out any food. As you can see, Tonosí is an amazing place with rich natural resources. However, residents face challenges caused by the environment every day.
