The Bulgarian Horo Dance

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This tradition not only brings the Bulgarian community together, but it also gives them a way to celebrate and express their joy. The horo also helps keep tradition alive as the steps and patterns are passed on from one generation to the next. Bulgarian culture really values honoring the past and keeping traditions alive.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Some historians think that the circular dance was first made to resemble the solar system. The people whirling around the musical instruments at the center look similar to the planets revolving around the sun. Furthermore, the direction people are dancing in is the same direction that the planets go in. While the dance is most traditionally done in the form of a circle, sometimes it can be just a straight line or even look like a snake, especially in restaurants where the dancers are weaving in and out of tables.
