Recognizing Different Perspectives

The United States is arguably one of the most powerful countries on earth, and unfortunately this means many Americans do not really think that we need to consider the perspectives of others to survive. But in reality, what makes the U.S. great, and what secures the best future for all of us, is our diversity and our ability to welcome new ideas, not just to recognize the perspectives of others, but to celebrate them.

I hope that my time in Finland with my classmates from around the world ignites my curiosity and humility about the perspectives of others. Whether we are swimming in a frozen lake, laughing over a hilarious card game or taking a long, critical look at U.S. policy in the Middle East, our international group works well together because we are respectful and willing to consider perspectives different than our own.
