A Popular Japanese Pastime - Karaoke!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Karaoke started in Japan around the 70s, and quickly spread across the country because it's an inexpensive way for both students and adults alike to have fun and pass time. In fact, my Japanese friends have told me that it's pretty common for middle school and high school students especially to go to karaoke.  You don't have to be good at singing to participate!

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Japan has a relatively stressful school and work culture, so karaoke is often seen as a way to relax after school/work.
