A Bittersweet Good-Bye to Bishkek

There were already six people living in the house, each with their own busy lives. Life in this new home was very different from life in America. They ate different foods, had different perspectives, dressed differently, and spoke a different language. Being immersed in this environment every day helped me to truly understand life in Bishkek. I saw the happiness and struggles of students, parents, women, and men in Kyrgyzstan.

One of the most important lessons I learned is to give yourself time. It was easy for me to worry at first that I would never fit in or get used to life in Bishkek. However, soon enough, I became close friends with my host sisters and the other Americans studying with me. I found a route to school that I liked. I found my favorite cafes in town. I learned my host family's schedule. I figured out how to properly use my school's website portal. I discovered ways to pursue my hobbies. Little by little, I felt more and more comfortable. One day, without realizing it, I suddenly felt like I did belong.

I hope this journey has inspired you, at least a little bit, to go out and explore. My Bishkek adventure was made possible thanks to the Gilman Scholarship, which financially supports undergraduate students pursuing study abroad. There are so, so many amazing opportunities like the Gilman. All you need to do is find them and apply! Once you're in college, that is. For now, you all can start dreaming about what you want your study abroad adventure to look like.
