Chiefs, the well-respected village leader

The main chief can also appoint sub-chiefs, who are also considered royal and help with leadership duties.

The duties of a chief depend on the community. In my community, the chief acts like a peacemaker or judge. He listens to disagreements and makes decisions after hearing both sides. The chief may also set rules to help keep things fair. Chiefs are highly respected in their communities and have authority, which means people trust them to make fair decisions. In other communities, chiefs help manage public land and decide how it is used.

Chiefs also take part in cultural traditions and ceremonies. For example, my community celebrates a yam festival twice a year. During the festival, people give thanks and hope for good rains and a successful harvest. The chief plays an important role by leading prayers and celebrations.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Ghana has had chiefs for thousands of years. Before modern governments existed, chiefs helped organize communities, solve problems and protect traditions. Today, chiefs continue to bring people together and help communities stay connected to their history and culture.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Yes, this tradition is connected to the environment. Many chiefs help make decisions about land and farming. Many communities also have a chief’s palace, which is a special place where the chief lives and works, although my village does not have one.
