"Hey There's China!" - Living by the China-Vietnam Border

Being so close to the Chinese border makes selling and trading products with and in China a lot easier. Lastly, locals are never bored because there is always something going on, such as cultural festivals for ethnic minority groups in the province.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Many people in Ha Giang experience difficulty accessing certain resources, such as schools and health care due to where they live in the mountains. Some places do not have electricity, and although this is slowly changing, some places are difficult to get to. Many people make a living farming in Ha Giang which is difficult to do with the rocky terrain, so farming land is limited. Also, due to terrain in Ha Giang, many people need motorbikes if they want to travel long distances, which could be difficult to purchase if you live far from the city.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Many people have adapted to the environment by planting crops wherever they can grow. Some people will even plant corn crops in the steep rock cliffs which are all done by hand. I have seen so many crops growing out of what looks like just rock; it's impressive! Some herding communities live in the mountains and some of the kids even use the cliffs as a playground! Many small towns have carved paths across the mountains which makes travel and farming easier for them.
