Flora of Tbilisi

Introduction:

One thing my advisors told me before I came to Georgia was that the plants were gorgeous. I arrived in early January and was surprised to see the entire city was grey and cold. It was a bit of a disappointment. As a Californian, I was used to it always being warm and Sunny. Now that May is almost over, the plants are beginning to bloom. And one flower stood out to me the most.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Originally, I thought it was a candy wrapper. Or even a loose paper that someone had littered. When I got closer, I saw it was in fact a small flower. Red with a splash of black in the inner petal. I learned later it was a poppy flower.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

When I first saw it, I was startled. I have seen plenty of red flowers in my lifetime, but also with hints of black? It was gorgeous. I couldn't help but keep admiring it and snapped a few photos. When I first arrived in Tbilisi, everything was drying up. Now seeing this pop of color made me feel hopeful.

Where does it live?:

This flower is very common in the city of Tbilisi, The first time I spotted it was on a hike with a friend from school. It was on top of a small mountain near Turtle Lake. After doing research, I found out that the poppy is commonly found in both Asia and Eastern Europe.
