Estonia has played a major role in creating websites that allow ordinary citizens to participate in government policy. These websites also allow people to provide feedback to representatives on certain programs. I have so much respect for one organization in particular, the Estonian Cooperation Assembly, and admire the ways in which it allows people to take part in the process of asking about policies for their country. This is especially important in any democracy since there can sometimes be a gap between the government and the people on the ground. We have certainly seen this gap in American politics these days!
My time in Estonia has given me renewed faith in democracy and the power of civic technology that can keep citizens informed and encourage them to be proactive! After my time here, I am excited to vote in every election in the U.S. from here on out.
