Traveler Bio

Namaste (Hello)! My name is Anjalee. I am 25 years old and grew up in Lafayette Hill, PA. Growing up I was always eager to explore new places, experience different cultures, and try new foods. While I was in college I majored in International Relations, learning about history, economics, and politics all around the world. I also completed pre-medical courses to become a doctor. My interests in exploring the world and medicine combined into my desire to work in global health. I have worked on maternal/child health and nutrition projects in rural villages and health clinics in the Dominican Republic and the Gambia. Now, I am grateful to have the opportunity to work in environmental occupational health research in Nepal. Fulbright-Fogarty Public Health Fellow!

For my research, I am taking a one-year break from medical school to study polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposures and related health symptoms in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Brick kiln workers are typically migrant workers who come from all over Nepal and surrounding countries to work. Their work is strenuous and exposes them to harmful pollution during the brick-making process. It is hard labour, but necessary for workers to support their families. I will be collecting biological and air samples and running laboratory tests and research to assess the impact of dangerous pollutants on this population, and determine what steps we should focus on to improve their health.
