Candombe

Why does the community have this tradition?:

In the 1800s, the word candombe referred to both the gathering of African slaves and the music and dances they practiced together. Today, the term is used to describe this community-style drumming and dancing. It is a joyful dance, which you can see in Pedro Figari's colorful paintings.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

In many instances, oppressed people find creative ways of expressing themselves through art and music. Candombe is an example of this in Uruguay. Can you think of an example from the United States?
