Tasting Tunisian Cuisine

Introduction:

A town 20 minutes from me is called La Goulette and is known for its fish dinners. Fish is one of my favorite foods! Tuna is very popular in fast food, and can be found on pizza and in thick sandwiches called makloub. I've also counted over fifty brands of tuna at the local grocery store! However, a fish dinner would most likely be made with dorade, a small silver fish with white flesh and wonderful flavor. I went with a group of friends to one of the many fish restaurants in La Goulette to try a three-course fish dinner for only 12 dinar, the equivalent of four U.S. dollars!

What food did I try?:

The first course was a barley and seafood soup along with a few types of salads. The soup had a tomato base and was a little bit spicy, like most foods in Tunisia! There was one Arab-style salad, meaning it was chopped cucumbers, red onion and tomato, with lemon juice and olive oil as dressing. The other salad was a Tunisian dish called salata mashwiya, or grilled salad. It's similar to salsa with chopped tomatoes, spicy green pepper and onions. Eggplant can also be added, and it's all mixed with fresh olive oil. Next on the menu was brik, a mixture of parsley and tuna fried inside a thin filo dough along with a soft-cooked egg. It's almost like a fried dumpling. The texture and flavors of brik are amazing!
