I am a person who is more creative than meticulous--for example, I love textile art and I have been sewing since I was 12 years old, recently picking up crocheting and weaving. However, when you think about it, these artistic skills, like language learning skill, require dedication. And as I master them, I can create stunning works of art. I dream of becoming a textile artist, drawing inspiration from different cultures for my artwork.
My love of art is why I chose to study abroad. Not only did I want to be immersed in the language, with hopes it would become easier to learn the grammar, but I wanted to see how artisanship impacts the people in Oaxaca. Given this is a historic city, I knew they would have food, textile and language traditions that impact daily life in a positive and meaningful way. You can always find a connection between art and daily life, as many artists are inspired by their surroundings. During my time in Mexico, I want to connect with artists and makers to understand their perspectives and why they utilize their skills.
I wonder what aspect of life in Mexico you would like to connect with if you were the one traveling here!
