Taiwan's Monkey Business

The speakers at Shoushan Zoo sound a warning message about the resident wild monkeys on repeat, and signs around the zoo caution visitors to avoid bothering them, instructing them on what to do if a monkey lands on them (don’t panic and wait for it to jump off).

Still, despite being an admittedly pesky neighbor at times, these monkeys are respected Taiwanese creatures, and their protection is a priority for many. Laws to prevent cruelty and restrict private ownership of macaques have been put in place to ensure their humane treatment. As the only monkey species native to Taiwan, the macaques are not only a cultural symbol, but also an essential part of the ecosystem. It's important that we recognize them as such -- even if it means losing a bubble tea or two.
