Waffles, the Heart of Belgian Cuisine

Belgium has a diverse diet, as it proudly uses the food from the three cultures, Flemish, French and German inhabiting the country. The most famous Belgian plate back home is without a doubt Belgian waffles.

What food did I try?:

Belgian waffles come in two shapes, Brussels style and Liege style. Brussels style waffles have a thin batter and are rectangular shaped and are usually coated with powdered sugar. Liege style waffles use a thicker batter and are like a cake with unevenly shaped edges.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Waffles in Belgium are not typically served as part of a meal, rather they are sold on the street as snacks. The waffles are served warm as they are usually made shortly before you order them.

How is the food prepared?:

The food is prepared by vendors on waffle irons in either small storefronts or on the street. They are the most common fast food because they are easy to make and are popular among locals and tourists.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Waffles represent a traditional Flemish food because of the local abundance of barley and oats which lead to these bread treats being widespread. They are a national dish that reaches through the different regions.
