Accra Runs on Tro-tros!

Introduction:

Cars, tro-tros (minibuses) and motorcycles are all common transportations in Ghana, but which kind is most prevalent depends on which part of the country you are in. In Accra, I see many more cars and tro-tros on the road. However, when I visited Tamale, a place in north Ghana, motorcycles were more common than cars. The whole week I was Tamale, I did not see a single tro-tro. In the north, the land is dryer with more narrow paths, which are better suited for motorcycles than cars. In Accra, the roads are better suited and wide enough for cars.

How do people get around?:

Most people in Accra get around using some form of vehicle, such as a car or tro-tro. A tro-tro is a minibus that  fits up to 18 people. On board, there is a mate (basically a conductor that is not the driver) that will shout out towards the road with the direction they are going. For example, you may hear a mate out the window shout, “Madina!, Madina!, Madina!” to signal that this particular tro-tro is heading towards Madina. Tro-tros, unfortunately do not leave until they are full, which may cause a delay in where you need to go. If you need to get somewhere on time, it may be best to start your journey earlier or look at another option.
