Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This week I traveled from Tralee, on the west coast of Ireland, to Dublin on the east coast. That is about 300 kilometers or 186 miles.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

I traveled a lot on this journey! I made day trips from the house I was staying at in Banteer to Cobh, Tralee and Dublin. Each trip was about 65 kilometers, or 40 miles, one way.

How did I get around this week?:

I did not have a car in Ireland, so I spent a lot of time using public transit! I rode the train called Iarnród Éireann, which is Gaelic for "Irish Rail," and the bus. I also did a lot of walking! I walked an average of 11 kilometers, or 7 miles, per day!

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place I visited this week was a town called Cobh, which is pronounced "cove." Cobh has one of the largest natural harbors, Cork Harbor. It has been used for centuries as a shipping harbor and was a primary port for Irish immigrants to leave to the U.S. during the late 1800s. It was also the last port of call, which means that last place the boat stopped, for the RMS Titanic before it hit an iceberg and sank in April of 1912, though the city was called Queenstown back then.

My great-great grandmother also left from Cobh when she moved to New York in the 1880s.
