History between the Dominican Republic and Haiti

Introduction:

This semester, one of the classes that I'm taking is Cultura y Sociedad del Caribe Hispano (Culture and Society of the Hispanic Caribbean), and the majority of students in the class are Haitian. This is my favorite class because we all work together to get through it so I am meeting new people while doing my classwork. I have also been able to learn a lot about the history between the Dominican Republic and Haiti from the professor and from my fellow classmates. As you have been learning in school, in 1930, there was a dictator in the Dominican Republic. His name was Trujillo and his main objective was to not have any Haitians in the country. Although the country has grown and changed so much since Trujillo ruled, there is still some tension between Dominicans and Haitians. I do not know if I have enough of an understanding and/or experience to talk on this, but I will try my best!

What community need did I learn about?:

In my short time here, I have learned that there is still some tension between Dominicans and Haitians. I can see this as I walk around campus-I only see Dominican students with other Dominican students and Haitian students with other Haitian students. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I would love to see the University make more of an effort to bring these students together.
