Carnaval in the Dominican Republic

Introduction:

Carnaval is a month-long celebration that starts February 1st and ends on the Dominican Republic's Independence Day on February 27th.

What tradition did I learn about?:

This past month, I learned about Carnaval which is a popular celebration in the Dominican Republic. Carnaval is essentially a large parade. The parade is held primarily on the main streets of the towns or cities. In Santiago, it takes over the area of El Monumento (The Monument). In La Vega, it takes over the entire city. People gather in the streets to watch the parades. People wear colorful masks, and most of the people with masks carry a "vejiga" or whip to hit people, which is part of the parade's excitement. Traditional music such as bachata, merengue and dembow is played throughout the day.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The Dominican Republic has this tradition to celebrate its Independence Day on February 27th. They say that Carnaval has been celebrated in La Vega since 1510, which explains why La Vega is the most popular city for Carnaval.
