Celebrating San Mateo in La Rioja

Introduction:

La Rioja is well known for its vast vineyards full of fresh grapes. Every September, the grapes are harvested, or collected, by agriculture workers. The people of La Rioja celebrate the grape harvest with a week-long festival called San Mateo! There are many exciting events that take place during San Mateo, but one of my favorite traditions is the grape stomping event.

What tradition did I learn about?:

During the San Mateo festival, there is an exciting grape stomping event where two people stand in a large bucket full of grapes and stomp on them with their feet and to create grape juice! Would you like to crush grapes with your feet or drink the grape juice?

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The grape harvest is an exciting time because it means that both the earth and the agriculture workers did a great job of taking care of the vineyards, so there are plenty of big, juicy grapes for us to enjoy. People stomp on the grapes to create grape juice to celebrate the grape harvest and how the grapes will nourish us.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This tradition is very connected to the environment because it is a celebration of the fresh grapes that the land has provided its residents. People rely on the natural environment to produce fresh grapes.
