Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This island is very small (about 27 miles wide and 45 miles tall), but travel by car is usually very slow. It takes an hour and a half or more to drive from the top to the bottom. One problem is that there are limited roads going to different areas, so everyone on the overpopulated island is trying to take the same road at the same time.  I went up to the top and down to the bottom this week, and both trips were slow due to traffic.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

That's a complicated question! I live in North Carolina normally, but took an airplane from Atlanta, Georgia to Paris, France, and then to Mauritius all the way at the southern tip of Africa! I travelled around 11,000 miles (40 hours in airplanes and airports) just to get here! Luckily, there's only so much travel you can do on this tiny island.

How did I get around this week?:

I had to buy a car when I first arrived on Mauritius, but the cars here are not the same as the ones you see in the United States. I opted to buy a Nissan March, which is a very popular car here on the island. We nicknamed it "Mars" because the month of March is pronounced "Mars" in French.
