Roti chaud (which literally translates to 'bread hot') is a pan-cooked flatbread that is rolled up with fillings of white bean curry (or a meat option), sauteed pumpkin, hot chili sauce, and sometimes other ingredients. Everyone makes it a little differently!
Sega music is the island's specialty. It is a bit like reggae music, but with a different sound. Local people spend their weekends on the beach having picnics and singing along to Sega songs. You can hear it everywhere you go! There is also a lot of European music, songs with French lyrics, techno/house music, and even a lot of American "oldies" played on the radio!
Definitely the highlight of this week was a trip with our local friend Yassir to go "caving" through old lava tubes! These "caves" were made a very long time ago when lava flowed through them, carving the rock into passable tunnels underground.
This week I read about the nearest island to us, Reunion, which is just to the west of Mauritius. It has one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Piton de la Fournaise. Another interesting thing about Reunion is that it is one of the top locations for shark attacks in the entire world! It has gotten so bad that it is against the law to swim on many of its beaches! We are hoping to visit Reunion soon!
