Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

Why does the community have this need?:

Throughout nearly every city in Israel, littering has become an overwhelming problem that needs attention. A major contributor to the issue of littering is how plastic is handled throughout Tel Aviv. When visiting the HaCarmel Market, produce is often held in plastic containers, plastic bags are available at nearly every stand and no recycling bins are in sight. Although it is a modernized city that values efficiency, Tel Aviv has only just begun working towards sustaining a healthier environment.

Is this need being met? How?:

Although the encouragement behind recycling has been based on aesthetics, or how something looks, littering has had a negative effect on plants and wildlife. Many different species of birds build their nests along the HaYarkon River. However, the pollution in the river has drastically changed its ecosystem. What was once a clean landmark stemming from the Mediterranean Sea has now become brown and no longer hosts as many animals as it once did. Despite having new city-wide recycling plans in place, many families and individuals only recycle to some extent. In Tel Aviv, large containers meant for plastic recycling have been placed throughout the city. However, many people continue to litter. What are some ideas that would encourage people to put more effort into recycling and cleaning up after themselves?
