Just Ask the Kids!

Introduction:

What do you imagine it's like to be a kid in Malaysia? How might it be different than New York? I asked my students questions today about their daily life. It was a challenge for them because I asked them to respond in English. Read on to hear their answers!

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

For breakfast, we eat cereal, nasi lemak (a Malaysian rice dish with spicy sambal sauce, cucumbers and anchovies) or nasi dagang (a Malaysia rice dish made with coconut milk, fish curry and ingredients such as pickled cucumber and carrots).

For lunch, we eat nasi ayam (a Malaysia rice and chicken dish), sausage, nuts, chips, chocolate, lollipops and crackers

For dinner, we eat nasi Kampung (a Malaysian village rice dish), chicken rice or food from KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken)

What is your house like?:

Kampungs or villages are similar to neighborhoods in the U.S. Students houses do not look like houses in the U.S. Here, there are no apartments or townhouses. Houses are usually small and square. They may have a slanted tin roof for the heavy rain.

What chores do you have at home?:

We help our parents clean, shop and cook.

What jobs do your parents have?:

Parents' jobs include a nurse, housewife, fireman, teacher, restaurant owner, food grower or shopkeeper.
