Floating on the Danube River

Introduction:

Vienna is a very big and important city. Many kings and queens have lived in Vienna. Many famous artisits, musicians and scientists have lived in Vienna too.

The weather in Vienna doesn't usually get too hot or too cold. It often rains all year long. There are lots of forests to use for wood. One of the most important parts of the environment in Vienna is the Danube River. Without this river Vienna would not be as big as it is today.

What makes this environment special or different?:

The Danube River is the second longest river in Europe. It is 1,785 miles long! The Danube River flows in a southeast direction. It starts in a place called the Black Forest in Germany. The end of the river flows into the Black Sea in Romania. The Danube River flows through 10 different countries! It flows right through the middle of Vienna.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The Danube River is very important to the history of Europe. Before cars or trains people had to use rivers to transport large things. This means people in Vienna could use wood from the Black Forest to build their houses and people in Austria or Germany could get wheat grown in Romania. Floating on a boat in the Danube River was the best way for kings to travel, too. That is why the Danube is sometimes called "the river of kings."
