National Day: An Austrian Tradition

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Over 70 years ago, Austria was part of a big fight between many countries called World War II. Austria was forced into the war on the side of the bad guys, and ended up losing the war. As a result of being part of this war, the Austrians made a promise to remain neutral in any future wars. That means they promised to never join any groups of countries fighting in another war. They celebrate this promise on National Day.

Today National Day celebrates the beautiful country of Austria and its service people. In Vienna there was a big parade with soldiers playing instruments and marching. People also came to see all kinds of service vehicles used by soldiers, police officers, rescue workers, firefighters and ambulance workers. It was a very busy and very fun day!

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Yes, National Day is connected to the environment. One way to celebrate is to run, walk, hike or bike on National Day. The motto is "Fit on National Day" and many people all over Austria go on "fit marches." Austria is a great place to be fit and play outside. Austria has mountains, hills, flat places, rivers, lakes and lots of green space. National Day partially is a celebration of the beautiful country!
