Traveling Around South Africa

Introduction:

Traveling, whether it's a short distance to the store or a long drive on vacation, is a big part of your everyday life! At first, I was nervous when I was told I had to walk 25 minutes just to get groceries. Back in the United States, I was so used to just getting in my car and making the short trip. Even though walking is a large part of how the locals travel around South Africa, it isn't the only way to travel. Keep reading to find out the other ways!

How do people get around?:

There are three major ways of getting around South Africa that I have observed. The first is walking, which is the most common, followed by scooters and motorcycles, and finally by car. While most of the cars around South Africa look similar to those in the U.S., I have not seen a lot of trucks during my time here. Taxi vans and bicycles are available too, but these are not as popular.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I was told by the locals not to use the taxi vans because of how dangerous they could be, so I never got to actually experience those. I cannot drive a stick shift (manual transmission), which is what almost all of the cars are here, but I was able to drive around with some friends.
