A Walk on the Wild Side

Introduction:

We have already talked about what kind of animals you thought about when you think of South Africa. Can you remember the animals we all listed? Lions, giraffes and maybe some elephants, right? When I first got here, I got to see all of those animals.

I bet that you'll never be able to guess the kind of animal I'm going to talk about in this field note! What is black and white and you thought only lived in super cold environments? That's right, penguins! South Africa is actually home to two different species of penguin. They are the endangered African penguin and the black-footed penguin. I'll only talk about the African penguin since that is the only species I got to see!

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The African penguin is unique in the way they are colored. They have a fully black back with a white belly, but they also have a black line that circles all the way around their chest. They also have a unique pink spot right above their eyes. You can see this spot in some of my pictures!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I've only been able to see the African penguin, but at first, when I saw them, I was shocked! I thought penguins only lived in cold places. However, here they live on the sand and near rocky shores. Being a bird fanatic, I felt happy and excited to get to see all these happy penguins walking around.
