Visiting a Homeschool Classroom in South Africa

This means that they have to be there at 7:30 a.m., school starts at 8:00 a.m. and they return home at 2:00 p.m. They also don't have lunch at their homeschool! Can you imagine not getting lunch at school?

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

The kids are not allowed to go to school by themselves and they do not have school buses. They mentioned that some schools allow the older high schoolers to use a bus, but other than that, there are none. Their parents take them to and from school. Do you take a bus to school? If you do, can you imagine not taking the bus?

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

They eat lunch at home because they do not have lunch at school. The very first answer that I got from the favorite food question was "pizza" and the second answer was "sushi!" Spaghetti was also a popular answer.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

While the kids learn English in school, they speak Afrikaans in most schools. There are some schools that are entirely English too. I mentioned this in the Zoom calls, but saying "hello" is just "hello" in Afrikaans!

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some of the most popular boy names included Johan (pronounced Yo-han), Jaco (pronounced Ya-coo) and Pieters (pronounced Pee-ters). The girl names included Meghan, Marie and Marilie (pronounced Mar-lee)
