Hello! For a few years, I've been a teacher in different countries, including several in Africa, in Asia, and in the Americas. Now I am in Mauritania.

Although Mauritania is a large country, it is a place very few people know about. The easiest way for me to describe it is that it is where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the country is just desert. Only a small area to the far south along the Senegal River is different. In the desert, for most of the year it is hot and dry during the daytime, whereas nights are cooler. Many people sleep on the roof of their house!

I came here to teach English. Before its independence in 1960, Mauritania was part of a large area that belonged to France, and many people here speak French. It is one of the languages taught in school. People speak different languages at home. One is Hassaniya, which is a form of Arabic, and other languages include Pular, Sonike, and Wolof. Many people easily speak two or three of these. English is important for doing business with other countries. It is used for communication with other professionals around the world. Plus, lots of social media is posted in English.

During my time in Mauritania, I am living in the capital city, Nouakchott. It has most modern conveniences.
