Eating My Way Through Cape Town

This week’s journal was probably the hardest one to write, given how much of a picky eater I am (my favorite food is chicken tenders...). That said, one thing I have noticed about food in South Africa is just how much variety there is, which is unsurprising given the country’s cultural diversity.

Before leaving the U.S., I was worried about not being able to find some of my favorite snacks, especially Twix and Dulce de Leche Haagen-Dazs ice cream! However, I was pleasantly surprised by how many familiar products I could find here. South Africa has McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and many other American fast-food chains. Grocery stores also carry familiar cereals like Frosted Flakes and candy brands like Twix, Snickers and Lindt. At the same time, certain products seem to be much more popular here than in the U.S. Corn Flakes and Cadbury chocolate, for example, appear to be staples in South African grocery stores.

Interestingly, even familiar products can taste completely different here. For example, Frosted Flakes seem less sweet, and some ice creams taste less creamy than what I am used to.
