Tracking My Travel

Mass transit is the most popular method of travel because the major roads are not the best in Bulgaria and there are often delays. Buses are also popular in Bulgaria, but they are more expensive than trains. Bulgaria’s main railroad network is called BDZ. They offer students discounted travel ID cards that allow them to travel with a 50% discount!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I was very nervous about using the train system. I had never lived in a big city before and had never used public transit. I felt overwhelmed!  On the train, you have to make transfers to other train lines and the signs are not always clear. The signs are only in Bulgarian and the timetables are confusing too. Luckily, the other train riders are willing to help me and ensure that I arrive at my destination. Once, when I was traveling, I met an older couple who helped me get on the right train from Bulgaria to Craiova, Romania. Then, when we got to Romania, I was able to help them navigate to their final destination. It was a sweet interaction, and we even exchanged numbers so we could keep in contact!

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Traveling with trains and buses is connected to Bulgarian culture because it allows you to relax and enjoy your trip without hurrying to your next appointment. Bulgarians have a very relaxed pace of life and like taking their time and enjoying their day. It is very different than the constant rush in America! Not only do the slow trains allow you time to relax, but they also provide you with a lot of different scenery.
