“Salang ka Khotso” Stay with Peace

Of course, life here in Lesotho comes with its challenges, but what place does not have challenges? I am learning to live without things I enjoyed back home, like electricity, indoor plumbing and Trader Joe’s. Living without these things teaches me to be okay with just enough. When I go back home to America, I hope to learn from the Basotho people, use less water and grow my own food. When it is your turn to travel, welcome new challenges and grow from them.

The best part of my service as a Peace Corps Volunteer is community. The people in Lesotho are warm and friendly people. They treat you like their own family. We help each other, and we care for each other. Basotho people are teaching me to love my neighbors. To me, this means planting in each other’s gardens, enjoying a meal together and learning a new language. The Basotho culture is beautiful, too. People love to sing and dance. They wear colorful clothes and play cheerful instruments. Basotho people greet others with love and respect, and they are a peaceful nation.

I hope you will think about joining the Peace Corps someday. Maybe, you will even serve in Lesotho! That would make me happy! You can join as an Education, Health, Environment, Economic, Youth Development or Technology Volunteer. Peace Corps Volunteers are brave and curious about the world. We serve our country by becoming friends with people around the world and promoting peace. Learn more about Peace Corps Lesotho here: https://www.peacecorps.gov/lesotho/

As we say in Lesotho, “Salang ka Khotso” (Stay with Peace)!
