Yes, in recent years, overall literacy rates have been improving as a result of government efforts/initiatives. The Ministry of Education, which is the government agency in charge of the education systems in the Dominican Republic is implementing new initiatives for teaching literacy that is likely going to impact the literacy rates in the Dominican Republic. In addition, there are Peace Corps volunteers providing support all over the country. As a volunteer, I can use my free time to make materials that the kids will enjoy and that teachers might not have time to make. I also do tutoring sessions with students that need more support or are behind in their classes. This makes classroom management slightly easier for the teachers while simultaneously, giving the students more one-on-one or small group support. I also do all of my work with the support of a counterpart. Each project that I am a part of, I select a willing member of the school to help me with it. This way, when my service ends in two years, someone at the school will be able to continue the work that I am doing.
