From Wisconsin to The Gambia: A Journey of Adventure

I love how this sense of generosity brings people together and makes you feel connected to those around you.

My work as a health volunteer has also been extremely rewarding. I love connecting with mothers and their children to improve health outcomes. I collaborate with local health staff on projects related to improved nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding and proper hygiene techniques. Additionally, I often help at Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) clinics to track and monitor children’s weight progression and vaccine records to make sure they are healthy. I have also really enjoyed learning about agriculture and forestry! I often go to the farm to help my host family harvest vegetables and I love how connected I feel to the Earth. I have also helped initiate a garden and tree nursery at one of the schools in my village.

If I have any advice for my readers and fellow travelers, it is to keep an open mind and seek out experiences that help you connect with the world and its people. This can be done both locally and internationally! Even where you live now, you may be surprised by the people you can connect with and the new places waiting to be explored. Today, it is easy for us to stay connected online while feeling disconnected from what is right in front of us. Exploring new places and meeting new people can open your eyes to the amazing opportunities around you to grow as an individual and contribute to a better world.
