Even if you do not use a language besides English in day to day life, being open to learning other languages can open countless doors: you can make friends with people from other countries, and you can easily navigate whatever country that your language is spoken in.
Coming to Spain with knowledge of Spanish allowed me to communicate in situation as simple as going to the grocery store or grabbing a taxi. With all my current classes being taken in Spanish, my fluency has increased, which makes conversations easier and more enjoyable. Spanish is spoken in 21 different regions across the world, from Spain to Colombia to Paraguay. In the United States, there are estimated to be almost 60 million Spanish speakers. I also do volunteer work at a hospital near me in Madrid, where I accompany patients, and knowing Spanish means I can make them much more comfortable.
If you are interested in a particular culture and want to learn its language, you can try to find local organizations or clubs from that country in your own city. Also, with technology, you can now download apps. for learning languages like Duolingo. In high school or college and beyond, knowing a language may even give you the opportunity to study abroad.
