The main event takes place at Schillerplatz, which was looking quite empty just an hour before festivities began!
By 11:11, Schillerplatz was so full of people, you couldn't move!
The kickoff to Karneval was celebrated with live music and lots of cheering
The Mainzer Prinzengarde, which leads the parade around the city, has been a tradition since 1837
The colors of the Prinzengarde are red, blue, yellow and white, which are also the officials colors for the Mainz Karneval
These giant heads called Schwellköppe are meant to make fun of German politicians!
Dressing up for Karneval is a must! It's like Halloween... but BIGGER!
I spy a bumblebee, a giraffe, a ladybug, a pirate... what other costumes can you see?
