On a typical weekday, I would take one of these long staircases down to a cafe in Downtown Amman or take one up to a neighborhood called Jabal Amman, which is where I’d work at school or study at the public library.
Neighborhood Shops: Grocery, Restaurants, Cafe's and Bakeries
As you walk through different neighborhoods, you'll notice that there are plenty of restaurants and cafes where people spend their time catching up with friends after work or enjoying brunch on a quiet Saturday. You'll also pass by several bakeries where the warm smell of bread will invite you in to buy a quick snack on your walk. And of course, there are plenty of stops you can make to purchase fresh ingredients for the next dish you'll make. Downtown Amman is your best choice for grocery at it has an expansive food market with plenty of fresh produce, spices, an array of healthy, savory and salty snacks, pickled sides and really anything else you need to fill your dinner table. There, you'll also find a lot of stores that specialize in selling traditional items, such as embroidered gowns called thobes, souvenirs, craft supplies for calligraphy and embrodiery, among so much more.
Art and Education Much like New York City, you will also see that one of the many charms of Amman lies in the street art. Building facades and other walls are canvases for graffiti and outstanding murals made by both Jordanians and international artists, making the city a true open air museum of visual arts. In Amman, art is something created by the people, for the people.
