Food in Jordan

Introduction:

My food experiences in Jordan were nutritious, healing and so flavorful. Through this journey of trying different dishes, I was introduced to new ingredients, spices and styles of preparation. Most importantly, many of the meals you'll see were prepared by and enjoyed in the company of caring and kind friends who I met throughout my time in Amman.

What food did I try?:

Breads, Pastries and Tea

When I think of my time in Jordan, the first food that comes to mind is a pastry or flatbread. I had them so often! Pastries or breads were fit for any time of the day and I often remember enjoying them before going on a long hiking trip, for lunch on a school day or just as a light late-night snack. My favorites were manaqeesh (flatbread with toppings), fatayer bi sabanegh (triangular spinach filled pastries) and a tahini-molasses sandwich. These quick bites are usually enjoyed with a refreshing mint-infused black tea.

Main Dishes

I'm grateful to have met amazing Jordanian friends along the way, who so generously shared home-cooked lunch and dinner meals with me. If you remember the lunch spread from Ajloun in my article on Natural Landscapes, you may have spotted several red colored dishes. Those were pan fried tomatoes known as galayet bandora.
