One day when I went to Wembley to shop for Diwali clothes, I used a FlixBus from Cambridge, the Tube, a London bus, and plenty of walking just to get where I needed to go. For longer trips, like visiting Scotland, I have also used planes.
Walking is still my favorite way to travel. I can easily reach around 12,000 to 20,000 steps in a day, and I like being able to notice buildings, shops, streets, and little details along the way. Sometimes, though, my love of walking goes a little too far. I once walked about an hour to a Garba event at Storey’s Field, and then my friends and I took an Uber home that only lasted about ten minutes!
Using the London Underground, or the Tube, was easy for me to understand because I grew up using the NYC subway, but the payment system surprised me. In New York, I am used to paying the same subway fare regardless of how far I travel. London is divided into travel zones, so the price can change depending on where you start and where you are going. I really do not love that because traveling around London can become expensive quickly. I do find the Tube cleaner and, in my own experience, safer, but I still miss New York transit.
Definitely. Cambridge is compact enough that walking and biking can easily become part of everyday life. Seeing bikes parked outside colleges and groups of people cycling through the streets has become one of the things I associate most with living here. London feels completely different because it is so much larger.
