Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

The train from Luxembourg City to Brussels is about three and ½ hours. Adding the 45 minute commute from my dormitory to the Luxembourg City “gare” (what “train stations” are called here), I was about four hours and 15 minutes away from home. This trip is about 220 kilometers, or 136 miles.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

The farthest I have traveled during my grant so far has been to the city of Ghent in the very north of Belgium. I had never heard Dutch spoken in real life before, so it was very magical! I’ve included some pictures of Ghent here. It is known for being somewhat of a fantasy village!

How did I get around this week?:

I primarily utilized the subway system in Belgium! While public transportation is publicly funded (and thus, free to use!) in Luxembourg, commuters must pay for each ride in the Belgian subway. I must say, after getting used to free trains, trams, and buses in Luxembourg, tapping my credit card to use the underground transport in Brussels made me cringe a little bit!

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place to me was the Grand Place in Brussels. Gilded in gold leaf, this town square houses the city hall and historic buildings built by the ancient guilds of Brussels.
